 Joel Hayter was born and raised in Washington state where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2004. He began a career in software engineering at Honeywell and Microsoft. He discovered his true calling as a lawyer and moved to Houston in 2007 where he attended law school at South Texas College of Law part-time while working as a law clerk for The Schaffer Firm full-time.

Once licensed in 2011, he practiced criminal defense at The Schaffer Firm as an associate, specializing in post-conviction writs of habeas corpus. In 2020, he founded The Hayter Law Firm, practicing civil law, and specializing in commercial litigation and judgment collection. He has grown his practice largely by word of mouth, gaining experience and expertise in other areas such as probate, uncontested divorces, personal injury, and commercial eviction. 

Joel has two teenage boys, Austin and Ashton, and a trusty legal assistant, Diana, who made this website possible.  His hobbies include daily tennis, weight lifting, scuba diving, song writing, and performing music at churches and music venues throughout Houston.
