Meet Joel Hayter
Joel Hayter was born and raised in Washington State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Washington in 2004. He began his professional career as a software engineer at Honeywell and Microsoft before discovering a passion for the law.
In 2007, Joel moved to Houston to pursue that calling. While attending South Texas College of Law part-time, he worked full-time as a law clerk at The Schaffer Firm, gaining valuable hands-on experience in litigation and legal research.
After becoming licensed in 2011, Joel continued at The Schaffer Firm as an associate attorney practicing criminal defense, where he focused on post-conviction writs of habeas corpus. In 2020, he founded The Hayter Law Firm, where his practice has included civil litigation, commercial disputes, judgment collection, probate matters, personal injury, and family law.
Over time, Joel became increasingly concerned about the financial and emotional toll that many divorces take on families. He saw clients, friends, and family members spend tens of thousands of dollars fighting in court while their private lives were aired in public records, often prolonging the stress and conflict for everyone involved.
Joel believes there is often a better path. When spouses are able to work together and reach agreement on the terms of their divorce, the process can be far more efficient, affordable, and respectful. He is committed to helping clients navigate that process with clarity and professionalism so they can move forward with their lives.
Joel is the proud father of two sons, Austin and Ashton, who are currently attending college. Outside of his legal practice, Joel enjoys tennis, weight lifting, scuba diving, songwriting, and performing music at churches and venues throughout the Houston area.
Joel enjoys using his diverse background and experience to help clients solve problems and achieve their goals.
How It Works
- Free Initial Phone Consultation
We begin with a consultation to determine whether you and your spouse are able to cooperate and reach an agreement on the terms of your divorce. If so, your case may qualify for a simpler, more affordable process.
- Flat Fee Agreement
For an uncontested divorce, you will only pay one flat legal fee that covers everything, including filing expenses, so that you know the total cost up front.
- Provide Case Information
You will provide detailed information about your situation, including property, children (if any), and the terms that you and your spouse have agreed upon.
- Petition Filed
We prepare and file the Petition for Divorce with the court to officially begin the case.
- Spouse Signs Initial Paperwork
We send you documents for your spouse to sign, such as a waiver of service, to keep the case simple and your costs down.
- 60-Day Waiting Period
Texas law requires a minimum 60-day waiting period after the case is filed before a divorce can be finalized.
- Final Agreed Divorce Decree
We prepare the final agreed divorce decree reflecting the terms that you and your spouse have agreed upon. You and your spouse review and sign, if approved.
- Finalization
In some cases, the court may require a brief hearing to finalize the divorce, either remotely or in-person at the courthouse. We will attend the hearing with you. In other cases, the court simply signs the divorce decree.
